The Arc of Harrison County

The Arc of Harrison County began as an educational program in 1953 for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Today, the Arc of Harrison County continues to provide services to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The Arc has expanded its service area to include both Harrison and Randolph Counties. The Arc of Harrison Country currently serves a total of 44 participants in Harrison and Randolph Counties.

The purpose of the Arc is to promote opportunities and relationships for persons with developmental disabilities and to educate the community. The principles of integration, interdependence, empowerment and freedom of choice are inherent principles of this mission. The Arc believes that all human life is sacred, having equal and unconditional value. All people regardless of background and ability can grow, make choices, and be valued as contributing members of our community.

The Arc of Harrison County offers a Vocational Program which assists individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in securing and maintaining employment within their communities. The program includes pre-screening for proper placement, on-site job coaching, and post-placement follow along services. The Community Support Program provided by the Arc provides services to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, through the I/DD Waiver Program. The program is state and federally funded, and its services allowing individuals to achieve their highest level of independence. The program promotes independence allows individuals to reside with natural family or in their own apartments, while teaching daily living skills. The Arc of Harrison County is a chapter of People’s First, a self-advocacy group. Participants attend an annual conference at Jackson’s Mill, participating in many personal growth activities. Recent partnerships with the Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary and the Harrison County United Way have allowed the Arc to expand their resources and empower their participants.
