For over 45 years the Clarksburg Kiwanis Club has volunteered to be the manpower behind the Clarksburg Christmas Parade, which takes place each Holiday season in Uptown Clarksburg. In addition to Marshalling the Parade, the Clarksburg Kiwanis parade volunteers are responsible for organizing the units of the parade, fitting each unit into the parade line-up, including the floats. Those who organize the line-up of the parade are stationed by the Clarksburg Fire Dept. on Main Street to flow each participant into the parade. Kiwanis members are the crisis management of the Christmas Parade each year, and ensure that the parade flows smoothly.
In 2017 the parade was sponsored by the Clarksburg Kiwanis. The $500 parade sponsorship fee was then donated to CASA, the charity of Kiwanis choice. Kiwanis long standing member, Denver Atkinson, stated “The Christmas Parade brings Santa, who brings the hope and wonder of Christmas. Children who have the hope of Christmas feel good, and it allows them to experience what a magical time Christmas truly is”.
The Clarksburg Kiwanis community service projects always benefit the kids in the Clarksburg area. In addition to the Christmas Parade, the Clarksburg Kiwanis also donated $1,000 to Wilsonburg Elementary School, which will fill backpacks with food for children to take home over the weekends or Holiday breaks. A donation of $500 was also made to the Harrison County Sheriff’s Dept. for their Shop with a Cop program, which benefits children from across Harrison County. The Kiwanis finished off their week with bell ringing for the Salvation Army at the Meadowbrook Mall on Saturday, and each year donates $500 to the Salvation Army.
The Clarksburg Kiwanis meet the first and third Thursday of each month at 12p.m. at Raymon’s Restaurant in Clarksburg. To become a member of the organization, potential members can stop by a meeting and fill out a member application form.
