The Clarksburg Police Department consists of forty-two sworn officers,
two parking enforcement officers, an animal control officer, and five
administrative support personnel. The department is responsible for
the protection of life and property, enforcement of the law, preserving
peace, and the prevention of crime.
The Chief of Police is responsible for the overall management and daily
operations of the Department. The Chief is dedicated to providing the
very best service to maintain the safety of the officers and the
citizens we serve. We are committed to serving our community to
enhance the quality of life. We strive to promote an environment
receptive to tourism, visitors, economic growth, and the preservation
of the city. Our officers and staff are continuously trained and
educated to provide the highest quality of service to our community. We
are committed to nurturing the public trust by holding ourselves
accountable to the highest standards of professionalism and ethics.
The Administrative Lieutenant directs the daily operations of the department and
is also the Training Officer, Grant Coordinator, and Special Events
Coordinator.
An Administrative Assistant is employed to provide the day to day
administrative support to the Chief of Police and the department. The
Admin Assistant provides interface with visitors and callers, city
officials and VIPs, the media, police and federal agencies, and special
interest groups.
Patrol Division currently consists of three eight-hour shifts. Patrol
Division Officers are the first responders to a call for police service
and respond to a wide variety of calls for law enforcement assistance,
acts of violent crimes, traffic control and enforcement, performance of
many community policing functions, and they are an integral part of the
investigation of crime. Patrol Officers receive specialized training to
enhance their service in a variety of scenarios, such as hostage
negotiations, suicide threats, terrorist threats, etc.
Investigations Division consists of five sworn officers and a civilian
administrative support specialist. Their function is to conduct follow-up
investigations of crimes and receive specialized training and education
to investigate homicide, sexual assault, abuse, burglary and robbery,
economic crimes, missing persons and amber alert, theft, domestic
violence, etc. They are responsible for solving the most minor of
crimes, to the most critical.
Special Response Team (SRT) consists of ten highly motivated officers,
who are extensively trained in special weapons and tactics. The SRT
members receive an initial 40 hours of intense training and continue
training one day per month making members current on evolving tactics
and weaponry. In addition to the needs of the Clarksburg community, the
SRT assists county and federal law enforcement agencies on special needs
crime and crises events.
Harrison/Lewis County Drug Task Force work in conjunction with federal
agencies to address major, as well as minor, drug problems throughout
the two counties. Highly trained members of the task force utilize
various techniques in areas of surveillance, undercover investigations,
drug buys and sales, dynamic vehicle takedowns, search warrant service,
prescription fraud and scams, etc., to clearly send the message "not in
our town."
DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) has received enormous success in Clarksburg since its inception in 1987. Clarksburg's DARE Officer provides a drug awareness program to approximately 500 elementary and middle school students each year. The DARE Officer, who is trained in
areas of classroom management, child development, teaching techniques
and communication skills, leads a series of classroom lessons that
teaches children the overwhelming effect of drugs, and how to resist
peer pressure and live productive drug and violence free lives. The
Clarksburg DARE Officer also participates in several community relations
events throughout the year, such as "Hooked on fishing - Not on Drugs",
child fingerprinting, community events, parades, etc. The DARE Officer
also coordinates the Neighborhood Watch Program.
Clarksburg Police Department Honor Guard was formed to provide
ceremonial assistance in a variety of situations, such as funeral and
memorial services, veterans events, National Police Memorial Week
events, Inauguration Ceremonies, Dedications, parades, and award
ceremonies. The Honor Guard consists of eight members who receive
specialized training to perform the intricate duties for the various
events.
The Clarksburg Police Department employs an Animal Control Officer to
respond to calls for animal related services such as stray animals, care
for injured animals, controlling and securing dangerous, vicious or
threatening animals, treatment and humane care of animals. The Animal
Control Officer is trained and skilled in the field and responds to calls for service throughout the city.
The Clarksburg Police Department employs two Parking Enforcement
Officers who, with the use of computerized equipment, enforce the
parking laws throughout the city.
Citizens Police Academy is a group of non sworn officers who receive
extensive training in police department matters to allow them to assist
the department in a variety of public service situations. The CPA is
designed to build a partnership with our citizens to help identify
issues and find solutions. With this better understanding between the
department and the community, it becomes easier for police and citizens
to find realistic solutions to community problems. The Clarksburg CPA
has been most helpful in providing traffic and crowd control during
special events.
Central Records consists of two civilian employees who maintain the
safety and integrity of police records and reports.
Reports Management consists of one data input specialist responsible
for the accurate and timely input of reports of criminal activity and
violations of law, and tickets/citations; and maintains a data and
statistic base for reference.
Tip Line is provided for citizens to report areas of concern.
Investigations Division monitors the tip line and responds accordingly.
