Recreation
Clarksburg is a wonderful family-oriented city. Its many parks and
neighborhood playgrounds are kept in excellent condition and provide
year-round enjoyment for Clarksburg residents and visitors.
Veterans Memorial Park...A 50-acre park located off of US Route 98 and
Route 19S, includes a 50-meter Olympic sized pool and water slide
complex in addition to an 18-hole miniature golf course. Also
included within the confines are a 2-mile fitness trail, lighted
tennis courts, basketball court, three little league baseball fields
(1 lighted) and many picnic areas with six shelters with grills. [ Locals,
particularly children, love to visit the trail area by the bridge to feed the
ducks and geese that are a permanent part of the West Fork River.]
Clarksburg City Park - a 38-acre park located along Route 29 south
near Nutter Fort is the home of the "Frank Loria Memorial Baseball
Field" -one of the best facilities of its kind in the state of West
Virginia! This park also has a softball field, three little league
baseball fields, a soccer filed, multi-purpose field, play areas,
tennis courts, lighted basketball court, volleyball court and four
picnic shelters with grills.
Lowndes Hill Park is a 58-acre park that overlooks the city of
Clarksburg and is the location of the YMCA and a favorite of civil
war buffs with the former "trenches" still visible around this area.
Just 10 miles south of Clarksburg and in Harrison County, is the 532 acre historical state park - Watters Smith Memorial State Park. Within the confines of the park is an "historical and restoration interpretive area" - guided tours are available on a seasonal basis. All the buildings are constructed of hand-hewn logs and roofs are made of shingles constructed with a special "shaving horse" that may be seen in the Visitor's Center. There are miles of hiking trails available along with a swimming pool, volleyball and horseshoe pits, and riding stables from April through October.
