City of Clarksburg Named Small City of the Year by the National League of Cities

Washington, D.C. – The City of Clarksburg, W.Va., was honored as Small City of the Year by the President of the National League of Cities (NLC).  The city’s name will be placed on a Wall of Fame at the National League of Cities headquarters in Washington, D.C.  Clarksburg was chosen for its contributions to NLC throughout the year including support for membership development and implementation of NLC’s Enterprise Programs such as the NLC Prescription Discount Card and the NLC Service Line Warranty Program.

Clarksburg was recognized during NLC’s Congress of Cities and Exposition held in Phoenix, Ariz., November 9-12. Clarksburg Mayor Patsy Trecost and City Manager Martin Howe accepted the award on behalf of the city.

Mayor Trecost stated “it is an incredible honor for the entire city, as we are service oriented and we have many dedicated employees that have made the city what it is today”.  While City Manager Howe added, “The City of Clarksburg is very honored to have received this award as it exemplifies our dedication to the citizens of Clarksburg and our commitment with the NLC to maximize our investment bringing home solutions and cost savings programs.”
“Clarksburg has demonstrated outstanding commitment, leadership, vision and support for NLC,” said James E. Mitchell, Jr., Council Member, Charlotte, N.C. and NLC President.  “Our thanks to the city for its devotion to this great organization.”

Clarksburg is joined by other Wall of Fame honorees: the Arkansas Municipal League as State League of the Year; Rap Hankins, Council Member, Trotwood, Ohio as Board Member of the Year; Ed Reyes, Councilmember, Los Angeles, Calif., as Member of the Year and East Orange, N.J. as City of the Year.

The awards were sponsored by Black and Veatch, an NLC corporate partner.

The National League of Cities is the nation’s oldest and largest organization devoted to strengthening and promoting cities as centers of opportunity, leadership and governance. NLC is a resource and advocate for 19,000 cities, towns and villages, representing more than 218 million Americans.

Welcome to the City of Clarksburg PDF Print E-mail

The City of Clarksburg is tucked away in the hills of north central West Virginia.  Clarksburg (pop 16,743*) is the County Seat for Harrison County (pop 68,652*). Clarksburg is located at the intersection of two heavily traveled highways and the second busiest interchanges in the state; Interstate 79 and U.S. Route 50. Clarksburg enjoys the amenities of the largest city in the region with the advantages of a small hometown community.  Clarksburg residents enjoy a rich mixture of retail, industry, and government services, along with a thriving business community, and an abundance of recreational facilities.  Clarksburg has one of the best preserved historic downtowns in the state.

The crime rate in Clarksburg is the second lowest in the state of  West Virginia and is one of the lowest in the country.  Property prices remain low, and the cost of living is substantially lower than any metropolitan city. Clarksburg is a small community rich with economic growth, heritage, and family recreation.

Because of the population base, Clarksburg became (and still is) the main commercial, health care, and professional office location in the region. It also has a large number of State and Federal Agencies located in the Central Business District, including the U.S. Small Business Administration, Federal Court House, Social Security Administration, Department of Defense Biometrics Facility, and a new Fairmont State University - Clarksburg Campus, among others.

Clarksburg's Historic downtown is also home to the largest legal, accounting, and banking community in north central West Virginia. There are approximately 6,000 professionals working in the Downtown Central Business District each weekday.
