Hornor Brothers Engineers (HBE) is West Virginia’s oldest engineering firm, established by the Hornor brothers, Carl L. Hornor and Paul S. Hornor in 1902. The firm executed surveying and engineering work all over north-central West Virginia (NCWV). HBE surveyed for railroads, coal mines, and designed railroad sidings, coal tipples, and coal mines in addition to thousands of industrial lots. Many areas of Harrison County were laid-out and staked by Hornor Brothers Engineers as new residential additions, including: North View, Industrial, Grasselli, Nutter Fort, the Fairgrounds Addition, Norwood, White Addition, Arbutus Park, Alta Vista, Goff Plaza, Stealey, Adamston, Lumberport, and parts of Shinnston, Monongah and Fairmont.

From the 1930s-1990s HBE engineered the majority of the North Central West Virginia Airport’s facilities, which include the terminal building and control tower. The firm was also responsible for the design of the major runway expansion that took place in the 1990s

The engineering firm became involved in water system development during the 1940s through handling project management responsibilities for construction of water treatment plants and storage reservoirs in different NCWV towns. To this day HBE continues to consult with public service districts, municipalities, water associations, industries and individuals throughout NCWV on projects in this field. During the 1960s HBE did a large amount of work for the City of Clarksburg, which included designing approximately ten miles of concrete city streets.

In 1963 Paul A. Hornor, Jr. joined the company, then assumed the role of President when his father retired in 1985. During Paul Jr.’s term as President, HBE focused primarily on water system and sewer development, airport development and commercial and residential site development. Just as today, their land surveying services were actively involved.

Paul A. Hornor III (Trey) joined the company in 1985 before becoming the President in 2000. Trey and his brother, John, who is the company’s survey manager, represent the fourth generation of the Hornor family to be involved in the business. Marshall Robinson joined the firm in 2012 as a business partner which led the firm into designs associated with the development of gas well sites and related features.

Hornor Brothers Engineers offers a variety of services to its clientele such as civil engineering services, water system design, site design and development, oil and gas well site design, and land surveying and mapping. Hornor Brothers Engineers has designed more than 100 oil and gas pad sites in NCWV alone. They were also retained by the Clarksburg Water Board to design a waterline extension to serve the FBI fingerprint identification campus in Harrison County, and they also designed the existing waterline replacements located along Main Street and Pike Street in Clarksburg that were over 110 years old.

In addition they also served as the civil design firm for the new United Hospital Center in Bridgeport, WV, where they were responsible for the initial mapping and surveys, coordination of the geotechnical investigations, preparation of the site plans, design of a 2.1 million cubic yard excavation and embankment, temporary and permanent sediment and erosion control, storm water management, drainage, roadways, parking, sidewalks, retaining walls, water distribution and sanitary sewer systems, and much of the construction stakeout.

Hornor Brothers Engineers has also worked with various municipalities on a number of projects involving streetscape improvements in the central business districts of these cities.

After 116 years in business Hornor Brothers remains located in the Central Business District of Clarksburg, located at 140 South Third Street, where they have been since moving from their original location on Main Street, in 1937. Hornor Brothers Engineers features an aesthetically informative website for those who wish to inquire more about Hornor Brothers Engineers.
