West End Island Beautification Project

west end island beautification

The City of Clarksburg is embarking on its newest beautification project. The “green space” located within the West End section of Clarksburg will be brightened by flowers and shrubbery thanks to donations and time from individual donors and Stantec Consulting.

Stantec Consulting, the City’s retained engineer firm for the demolition program, approached the City several months ago asking if there was a project they could take on.  The City of Clarksburg was very pleased with the idea of revitalizing the “triangle” at the West End.

Stantec Consulting’s landscape architect department designed the proposed project.  The City’s Public Works Department cleared and cleaned up the area which is located at the intersection of West Pike and Milford Street in preparation for the project.  Stantec employees landscaped the triangle using plantings such as fountain grass, orange daylily, yellow daylily, fire chief arborvitae and stellar pink dogwoods.

A small bench along with a historical sign telling about the development of this area by John Simpson will remain intact.

Donor and former Mayor of Clarksburg Margaret Bailey stated, “This garden area is located at a crossroads that opens to so many areas of the city: Point Comfort, Adamston, Edgewood Addition, Stealey, Hartland, and Hill and Dale. I always wanted these gardens to add a touch of beauty and a sign of caring to the residents and visitors of this area, always creating that warm feeling that reassured you that "it's always a great day to be in Clarksburg, WV!"

Ms. Bailey worked with the City of Clarksburg’s Public Works Department for over 15 years providing and planting flowers to the area while Councilwoman.

Six years ago, Stantec launched its first Stantec in the Community Day (SITC). The impact of Stantec in the Community is a celebration of our year-round commitment to local communities.

SITC Week is about bringing our hearts and hands together to make a difference collectively volunteering in the communities we serve, enhancing our year-round activities. It’s why we design with Community in Mind.  Richard Gaines, Principal at Stantec, stated, “Stantec does projects yearly for our communities.  The idea and goal is to give back to the community where we live and work which makes for a sense of belonging and makes us stronger as a team.”

City Manager Martin Howe stated, “We were very pleased with Stantec requesting to do a community project in Clarksburg, this specific area was in need of a fresh new look and will assist with improving the line of sight for vehicular traffic as well.”
